Meta Title: An honest review of Instinct: where it succeeds and falls short in travel planning
Meta Description: I tested Instinct, the invite-only AI agent that books travel over text. Here's what it does well, where it falls short, and how it compares to Stardrift.

Over the last two weeks I took a trip out to LA, where I used both Instinct and Stardrift. Here’s my honest review of which tool is the right one for the job.

Instinct is good at doing one travel task for you over text: booking a flight, rebooking a hotel, or watching a fare. But it struggles to plan a whole trip. Instinct is designed for business travelers who just need a hotel, a flight and maybe a dinner reservation. It isn’t built for travelers who are trying to understand a place from the ground up, or piece together places that their kids want to go to. It’s also drawn criticism for its handling of data privacy.

## What is Instinct?

Instinct is a personal AI assistant you message like a person. It runs over iMessage or WhatsApp rather than in its own app. It connects to your email, calendar, and accounts, then takes actions for you, like booking travel, sending email, or making reservations.

Noah Shinn founded it in 2025, previously at Sierra. It is invite-only and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars from investors including Index Ventures and Benchmark ( [Skift](https://skift.com/es/2026/09/04/a-viral-ai-bot-just-showed-travel-what-frictionless-actually-means/)).

### Where Instinct succeeds

- **Doing a task end to end over text.** You can ask it to book or rebook a trip from a text thread without opening another app ( [Skift](https://skift.com/es/2026/09/04/a-viral-ai-bot-just-showed-travel-what-frictionless-actually-means/)).
- **Fare and award monitoring.** It watches fares and can act when something opens up. One user had it [monitor award availability and start the booking when a seat appeared](https://x.com/VoyageBliss/status/2098368354646167724). (Note that it monitors award availability using your account and can get you banned.)
- **Airline admin.** It can apply airline credits and keep your seat assignments.
- **Group plans.** As of October 5, 2026, early-access users can [add Instinct to a group chat](https://x.com/noahrshinn/status/2107161132192690558) to plan with friends.

### Where Instinct falls short for travel planning

**There's no view of your trip you can pull up.** Instinct can detect changes to your plans, but there is no screen to open mid-trip or glance back at. To find your hotel address or your gate, you have to ask and wait for a reply.

**There's no map.** It's hard to tell where places are, or how far they are from each other or from you. Instinct can draw a one-off picture if you ask, but it takes a while and you can't explore it.

**Payment trades privacy against card rewards.** By default Instinct pays through Link unless you give it your own credit card, which I wouldn't do for privacy reasons. Paying through Link can change how the charge appears on your card statement. If you're optimizing for travel points, check how the charge is categorized before relying on it. Since many premium credit cards can give you 4x rewards on points, this can be very costly if used incorrectly.

**Its data handling has drawn real complaints.**

- Product executive Claire Vo [disconnected Instinct from Google and, three hours later, got a text about her tax emails](https://x.com/clairevo/status/2090929592853037078). Instinct had kept its own copies of her email.
- Since then, users have reported more problems with deletion. One [emailed and messaged the team asking for their data to be deleted and had no reply a week later](https://x.com/codewarnab/status/2104976752426856845). Others reported [the delete setting not working](https://x.com/milianstx/status/2102687957303849150).

**Reliability has been mixed as it has grown.** Users have reported it [becoming "unreliable in the last few days"](https://x.com/ankitkr0/status/2104192414865133743), and [emails and events queued for 3–5 hours before sending](https://x.com/adambn/status/2100118160867258697). One user [planning a family trip](https://x.com/sahanamantha7/status/2093458124199850430) said it simply stopped working.

### Instinct pricing

Instinct is free while it's invite-only. Its founder has said he wants to keep it free ( [Invest Like the Best](https://x.com/zodchiii/status/2105218480488259830)).

## What is Stardrift?

Stardrift is an AI travel planner that builds and keeps your trip in one place. It plans day by day around the [bookings you already have](https://stardrift.ai/resources/travel-apps-consolidate-bookings), and updates the plan as new confirmations land in your inbox.

[Try Stardrift for free](https://stardrift.ai/authenticate?mode=signup)

### Top features

- **Everything in one place.** Connect Gmail and your flights, hotels and reservations are pulled into your trip automatically. When a new confirmation or change email arrives, the trip updates.
- **A trip you can open anytime.** Your itinerary, bookings and places are always one tap away. No need to ask and wait.
- **Map view.** See where every place is relative to the others, and to you.
- **Suggestions you didn't think of.** Explore rails suggest places to add, with photos. On iOS, the trip's Places tab shows every place as a photo tile, followed by a "Keep exploring" rail.
- **Flight price alerts (Pro).** Save a flight to your trip and Stardrift re-prices it twice a day, then tells you by push, inbox or email when the price moves.
- **Hotel booking.** Book hotels without leaving the trip.
- **Group planning.** Share a trip and plan it together with collaborators.

### Potential limitations

- **It doesn't carry out tasks over text.** Stardrift won't text you or rebook a flight by itself. It’s intended for use by people to plan out what they’re doing day by day on the trip
- **The app is iOS and web only.** There's no Android app yet.

### Data privacy & deletion

You can delete your Stardrift account from the app. Your login is removed straight away. Stardrift does not keep copies of your emails, and never reads emails that aren’t related to travel.

### Stardrift pricing

Free, with a Pro tier for features like flight price alerts.

## Can you use Instinct and Stardrift together?

Yes. They do different jobs.

1. Use Instinct to book or rebook a flight or hotel over text.
2. If the confirmation lands in the Gmail account you've connected to Stardrift, Stardrift pulls it into your trip automatically.
3. Use Stardrift to see the whole trip, the map, and what to do around those bookings.

## Is Instinct an AI travel planner?

Not really. Like [ChatGPT](https://stardrift.ai/resources/chatgpt-travel-planning), Instinct is a general-purpose assistant that can do travel tasks. It is best at "do this one thing for me." It isn't built to show you a whole trip, a day-by-day plan or a map. For AI planners that are, see our reviews of [Mindtrip](https://stardrift.ai/resources/mindtrip-review) and [Layla](https://stardrift.ai/resources/layla-ai).

- **Avoid Instinct if** you're cautious about privacy, or you need booking tasks to happen on time.

## FAQ

### What's the difference between an AI travel agent and an AI travel planner?

An AI travel agent, like Instinct, carries out tasks for you: it books a flight, rebooks a hotel or watches a fare. An AI travel planner, like Stardrift, organizes the whole trip: a day-by-day itinerary, a map and every booking in one place. Agents are best for single tasks, and planners are best for multi-day trips.

### Is Instinct free, and do you need an invite?

As of October 2026, Instinct is free but invite-only, so you need an invite to sign up. Its founder, Noah Shinn, has said he wants to keep Instinct free. Stardrift is open to everyone and free to use, with a Pro plan that adds features like flight price alerts.

### Can Instinct plan a whole trip?

Instinct can research and suggest a trip over text, but it has no itinerary view or map, so you have to ask for each detail and wait for a reply. Stardrift is the better choice for planning a whole trip: it builds a day-by-day itinerary with a map around the bookings already in your Gmail.

### Is Instinct safe to use with my email?

Instinct needs broad access to your email and accounts. In August 2026, product executive Claire Vo [disconnected Instinct from Google and still got a text about her emails three hours later](https://x.com/clairevo/status/2090929592853037078), because Instinct had stored copies. Instinct added a "Delete external data" setting the next day, but in September 2026 some users [reported deletion requests going unanswered](https://x.com/codewarnab/status/2104976752426856845).

### Does Instinct monitor flight prices?

Yes. Instinct monitors fares and can act when prices change or award seats open. Stardrift also tracks flight prices: on the Pro plan, it re-prices any flight saved to a trip twice a day and alerts you by push, inbox or email. Stardrift doesn't track flights you've already booked.

### Do I get credit card points when Instinct books for me?

It depends on how you pay. Instinct pays through Link by default unless you give it your own card, and paying through Link can change how the charge is categorized on your statement. If your card earns bonus points on airfare, check that an Instinct booking still counts as travel before relying on the multiplier. Hotels booked through Stardrift do count as travel spend.

### Which AI travel planners work with existing bookings?

Stardrift is the best choice if you already have bookings. Connect Gmail and Stardrift pulls your flights, hotels, and reservations into a trip automatically, then updates the trip when new confirmation or change emails arrive. You can also forward confirmations to your Stardrift address. Instinct can read your inbox, but it doesn't show your bookings in an itinerary alongside other plans.

### Is there an AI travel agent that can edit my itinerary directly, not just suggest changes?

Yes. Stardrift's chat edits your itinerary directly: ask it to add a place, move a dinner to another day or update a hotel stay, and the change appears in your day-by-day plan. Instinct can take actions like booking or rebooking, but it has no itinerary to edit, so changes live only in the conversation.

### How do I let an AI assistant read my existing flight and hotel bookings and build an itinerary around them?

Stardrift does this in four steps:

1. Sign up for Stardrift for free.
2. Connect Gmail. Stardrift imports your flight, hotel and reservation confirmations into a trip.
3. Ask Stardrift's chat to plan the days around those bookings, for example "fill my free afternoons with things near my hotel."
4. Keep using your inbox as normal. New confirmations are added to the trip automatically.

### What's the best alternative to Instinct for travel planning?

Stardrift is the best alternative to Instinct for planning a whole trip. It keeps every booking, a map and a day-by-day plan in one place you can open anytime, and it suggests places to add, with photos. Instinct is better for single tasks done over text.
