Tier 13 places
These are what I felt are the best Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. Good to great sourcing for the US, skillful prep, binchotan rather than blowtorches, good sake selections, and fine glass and lacquerware. I've enjoyed some of these as much as decently popular places in Japan, just not the top end.

Sushi Yoshizumi
Sushi Restaurant
By far and away the strongest option for high-end sushi in the Bay. An impressive sake selection, sourcing that sees some genuinely hard-to-procure ingredients, and a skilled hand doing modified edomae for the American palate. It is basically a family business with three or four employees, so there is more inconsistency than the reputation suggests, and they charge hard for everything. Last visit May 2026.

Hashiri Bettei Kaiseki Aoki
Japanese Restaurant
The best kaiseki restaurant in the Bay. Hayato and Jo in NYC are comfortably better, but overall a decent kaiseki place: Shinichi's plating, a great selection of mostly contemporary pottery and lacquerware, and with enough notice some very high-end product. Annoying to get back from on public transport, so Uber part of the way. Last visit May 2026.

The Shota
Sushi Restaurant
Tier 1 with head chef Ingi, Tier 2 or 3 with the apprentices. Ingi is skilled and tries very hard; akazu-heavy shari with heavy sujime on some pieces is right in my strike zone. A great option if Yoshizumi is too annoying to get to, but the restaurant is likely on ice for the foreseeable future, so check before booking.

Excellent experiences kept from further up by a range of factors that made the food or the experience a bit weaker. I would happily eat at any of these on any day of the week, and I go to a few of them with some frequency.

Sushi Shin
Sushi Restaurant
Two years ago this was my second favourite sushi place in the Bay. Jason is still extremely experienced, with clean ougon aji and luxurious hagashi toro, but the appetizers have become inconsistent and much of the nigiri feels different in a negative way. Given the expense and the distance from the city, several other options come first. Last visit October 2025.

Sushi Kinsen
Sushi Restaurant
The last visit was notably better than before, with a few courses quite solid and the rest alright. Sourcing is about the best you could expect for the menu pricing, and there is a solid mix of sake. A very good option if you are in the South Bay. Last visit August 2026.

Ranzan
Japanese Restaurant
A skilled chef offering largely traditional kaiseki with the flavour really amped, so not a lot of subtlety, but it works. Good sourcing and lovely lacquerware. I honestly prefer this to Yuji now: the artistry on the dishes and the food are better at the Kibune menu level. Last visit July 2025.

Wakuriya
Japanese Restaurant
A very hard reservation. I have only been once but enjoyed it: nothing amazing, but I am glad it is here. Lovely plates, bowls and serving donabes. Last visit May 2025.

Katsu
Sushi Restaurant
My go-to for a while. Sourcing post-tariffs has been difficult, the cooked-dishes chef Homare has left, and the nigiri have reportedly fallen off a cliff. Still executing at a decent level relative to the field, but I cannot recommend it at its price right now. Last visit October 2025.

Good restaurants that I would be happy to visit more often but for various reasons don't. All still vaguely recommended, and there were usually one or two really good pieces or dishes. Value is hard to find here, and if a trip to Japan is a real option for you, you don't need to do anything in the Bay below Yuji.

Hamano Sushi
Japanese Restaurant
Revisited after a while and very pleasantly surprised. If another visit is as good as the last, this is the best option for menus under $150; do the $120 nigiri course. Shiromi markedly improved. The nikiri is far too salty, so ask for a little less. Last visit January 2026.

Sushi Salon
Sushi Restaurant
Unique. A young chef really doing something fun in Oakland; it reminds me of Cagen in NYC. Shinkeijime gives the fish a firm, hwe-like texture, the shari and ginger run sweet, and the uncommon fish is mostly marked-up bycatch, but the hand roll at the end is my favourite anywhere here. I would not come in summer. Last visit August 2026.

FU HUI HUA
Chinese Restaurant
The Coco Yakitori x Fu Hui Hua pop-up dinners are the best high-end yakitori in the Bay right now: fresh birds killed and processed on the day of service, with tsumami and composed dishes from Tao. DM Coco to book. Last visit October 2025.

YUJI
Japanese Restaurant
Genuinely skilled and deserves more people; lots of same-day reservations. Meals in 2025 were more up and down than in 2023 and 2024, but still very competitive for the price and a reliably good random meal. The higher-ticket seasonal items are mostly Thursday-menu only now. Last visit September 2025.

Kenzo
Japanese Restaurant
Hard to get to, so I only go once or twice a year. Recent execution was significantly worse than I remember; the serveware is still good if you say you care, but nearly everything else is much weaker and the menu feels short. Last visit January 2026.

Ezo Omakase
Sushi Restaurant
The chef from Tokyo's viral Sushi Punch. A huge room with a lot of seats, so a less intimate experience; the sushi was solid and about what I expected. The South Bay never had much high-end sushi, so this will be popular. Last visit July 2026.

Friends Only
Japanese Restaurant
Something happened here and I do not know what. Non-traditional sushi built around dry-aged fish, which now feels a bit gimmicky, and recent meals have been uneven. Last visit December 2025.

KEN
Japanese Restaurant
Ken is a great host. The sushi is not a good value but can still be good; the otsumami are not the strongest. Sourcing is weaker and the nigiri are formed more sloppily than pre-tariff. Last visit November 2025.

Akari Japanese Bistro
Japanese Restaurant
Consistently good sourcing and I wish it were busier. The sake events and the sukiyaki are fun, but this is about the kaiseki: a really good high-end Japanese restaurant and a reliable back-up, like a modern version of the old NYC spots such as Sushi Zen. Last visit September 2025.

Hana Izumi
Japanese Restaurant
A good neighbourhood chef-driven kaiseki place, especially for the price. Inconsistently good across the menu, but there are usually two or three good things. Great value in a world of subpar $300 sushi. Last visit October 2025.

Sushi Jin
Sushi Restaurant
A decent budget option, semi-seasonal. Otsumami with nice fish, inoffensive nigiri, and cooked dishes that are not half bad. I would not travel for it, but it is good if you are nearby and Katsu is too expensive. Last visit August 2025.
4.5(238 reviews)
Nisei
Fine Dining Restaurant
Imprecise modern Japanese-Californian food. A fun youthfulness and innovation from the team, with the lack of refinement that tends to plague these restaurants, and little improvement in two years. Last visit January 2026.

Sushi Ai
Sushi Restaurant
Two young chefs serving strongly flavoured aged sushi with a lot of aburi. One good experience but a forgettable meal; I prefer the chef with glasses. Last visit August 2025.

An | Japanese Restaurant
Japanese Restaurant
Now Daisuke's, his first time owning a spot. Expect the mission to stay the same: seasonal fish at a reasonable price. I only expect it to move up the list as they find their sea legs. Last visit October 2025.

Sushi Hakko
Sushi Restaurant
Counter over table. Strong, punchy flavours and firm aged neta; the prepared dishes mostly miss. Skip it if Alex is not at the counter, and ask him to go lighter on the nikiri. Temporarily closed. Last visit July 2025.

KUSAKABE
Japanese Restaurant
Very chef-specific. Shinji, Patrick and Mika have all been pretty good in separate meals when it came time to make the sushi. There are more exciting concepts around now, but they do solid work, and I go often. Last visit March 2026.
