Wednesday, Dec 16 — Tochigi / Nikko day + overnight stay

After finishing the shrine-and-temple cluster, move uphill to Kegon Waterfalls
Finish the scenic portion at Lake Chūzenji
Overnight in Nikko
Transport: JR Tokyo Wide Pass Day 2; Nikko local buses are separate
Day 7
Thursday, Dec 17 — Gunma / Kusatsu overnight
Travel into Kusatsu Onsen and treat arrival as the main milestone of the day
After checking in or dropping bags, keep the rest of the day centered on the onsen town itself rather than adding more transfers
Prioritize a relaxed walk, onsen time, and the ryokan experience with private open-air onsen access
Keep this day intentionally simple so the stay feels like a reward, not just another transit day
Transport: JR Tokyo Wide Pass Day 3; final bus / local access to Kusatsu is separate
Day 8
Friday, Dec 18 — return / reset day + Railway Museum
Travel back from Kusatsu toward the Tokyo side and keep the day lighter
Make The Railway Museum your single focused stop so you still keep the main Saitama highlight without a full separate day
Use the rest of the day to reset, do laundry, or rest near your base
Transport: use normal fares / IC card as needed after the regional run
Day 9
Saturday, Dec 19 — west Tokyo finale
