Day 1
Date: Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Relaxed version: This is still intentionally loose, but now includes your must-do bookstore stop.
About McGregor Boulevard: this is Fort Myers' historic Avenue of Palms, a long river-side boulevard lined with royal palms, older homes, and glimpses of the Caloosahatchee. It is the prettiest historic drive already built into your route.
Historic neighborhoods worth driving through along your existing routes: add a slow pass through Dean Park near downtown, and on your Edison day you can also cruise through Edison Park just off the McGregor corridor.
Approx. drive times from the resort on Carefree Blvd: to Green Cup Café about 35-40 min; to River District about 35-40 min; to Ada's Green Leaf Cafe about 40-45 min; to Blinking Owl Books about 40-45 min; to Sunset Harbor Village Marina about 20-25 min.
08:00-08:45 Pick up the rental car at the airport.
08:45-09:30 Take the scenic approach north via McGregor Boulevard rather than the fastest inland route.
09:30-10:30 Have a slow breakfast at Green Cup Café.
10:30-11:30 Spend just a short, easy bit of time in River District.
11:30-12:00 Drive toward lunch.
12:00-13:00 Keep lunch relaxed at Ada's Green Leaf Cafe.
13:30-14:15 Browse Blinking Owl Books, your queer-owned indie bookstore stop.
14:15 onward Head up toward the resort, check in, and rest.
Optional near-sunset plan: if you want a very easy evening, go to Sunset Harbor Village Marina around 19:15.
Packing / weather cheat sheet: lightweight breathable clothes, a light sweater for indoor A/C, sun hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray for nature stops, refillable water bottle, and sandals or easy walking shoes.
For Sanibel + nature days: bring a small towel, shell bag if you collect casually, and a compact umbrella in case of a quick shower.
Best strategy: keep one small day bag in the car so you can stay flexible without carrying much.
Day 2
Date: Sunday, May 3, 2026.
Best weekday fit: Sunday works well; just avoid Friday because J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is closed Fridays.
Approx. drive times from the resort on Carefree Blvd: to J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge about 60-70 min; to Sanibel Lighthouse about 65-75 min; to MacIntosh Books + Paper just a few minutes off your Sanibel route; back toward Fort Myers about 45-55 min depending on exactly where you leave the island.
07:30-08:30 Drive from the resort area to Sanibel, aiming to arrive early before it gets warmer and busier.
08:30-10:30 Make J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge the main event; keep it low-key with wildlife viewing by car plus only short walks or boardwalk stops.
10:30-10:45 Drive across the island.
10:45-11:10 Stop briefly at Sanibel Lighthouse for a quick look and photos.
11:20-11:45 Browse MacIntosh Books + Paper, the island's longtime independent bookstore.
12:00 onward Head back toward Fort Myers for a relaxed lunch and a very easy afternoon.
Backup sunset note if you change your mind: the most relaxed true over-water choice is staying on Sanibel a little later and aiming for the causeway or beach side rather than rushing back.
Easiest backup picks: Sanibel Causeway for a lower-effort water view, or Bowman's Beach if you want the prettier classic Gulf sunset.
If you decide last minute not to make it a full sunset outing, keep Sunset Harbor Village Marina as the closer North Fort Myers fallback.
Want to tweak this itinerary?
Day 3
Date: Monday, May 4, 2026.
Historic drive add-on: after lunch, take a slow pass through Edison Park and the older McGregor corridor for the prettiest residential stretch of this day.
Approx. drive times from the resort on Carefree Blvd: to Edison & Ford Winter Estates about 40 min; to Ada's Green Leaf Cafe about 40-45 min; to Blinking Owl Books about 40-45 min; to Osteria Celli about 50-55 min.
09:00-09:30 Drive from the resort area into Fort Myers.
09:30-11:30 Start at Edison & Ford Winter Estates and enjoy the homes, gardens, and museum at a gentle pace.
11:30-12:10 Make the short drive toward lunch.
12:15-13:15 Lunch at Ada's Green Leaf Cafe.
13:45-14:30 Stop at Blinking Owl Books, your must-do queer-owned indie bookstore stop.
14:30-15:15 Take a relaxed drive through Edison Park and along McGregor before heading back to rest.
18:30 onward Dinner at Osteria Celli for your nicer Italian night.
Reservation shortlist: if you want to book ahead, prioritize Osteria Celli first.
Usually worth reserving next:Three Fishermen Seafood Restaurant, especially if you want a specific early dinner time.
Optional if you want certainty on lunch:Yucatan Waterfront Tiki Bar and Grill can also be worth checking ahead.
Usually less urgent:Green Cup Café, Ada's Green Leaf Cafe, and casual daytime stops are usually easier to keep flexible.
Day 4
Date: Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Best weekday fit: Tuesday is ideal here. Lovegrove Studio's Matlacha is open, and it keeps this day clear of Monday closures.
Approx. drive times from the resort on Carefree Blvd: to Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve about 50 min; to Yucatan Waterfront Tiki Bar and Grill about 40-45 min; to Matlacha about 40-45 min; to Lovegrove Studio's Matlacha about 45 min; to Three Fishermen Seafood Restaurant about 20-25 min.
08:30-09:00 Drive out to Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve.
09:00-10:30 Do the boardwalk at an easy pace and take plenty of pauses for wildlife viewing.
10:30-11:30 Head toward Matlacha rather than doubling back.
12:15-13:15 Lunch at Yucatan Waterfront Tiki Bar and Grill for more of an old-Florida waterfront feel.
13:15-15:45 Browse Matlacha slowly, with Lovegrove Studio's Matlacha as your main gallery stop.
17:45 onward Dinner at Three Fishermen Seafood Restaurant for an easy riverfront seafood night closer to North Fort Myers.
Day 5
May 6
Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Added as an extra day so nothing else in your itinerary shifts.
Purpose: active-adult / over-55 neighborhood feel + real-estate scouting in Sun City Center.
Approx. drive time from your resort area near North Fort Myers: about 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 15 min each way depending on traffic.
Suggested stops: start with a broad pass through Sun City Center, then compare Kings Point and nearby Valencia Del Sol in Wimauma.
Hospitals to drive past:HCA Florida South Shore Hospital for the closest core-area hospital, plus St. Joseph's Hospital- South for a broader regional-hospital comparison.
Lunch pick:The Hungry Greek is the lower-cost vegetarian-friendly choice and also useful for testing everyday convenience in the area.
Removed: the retirement-care comparison stop, so this day now stays focused on neighborhood/community scouting rather than care settings.
Good low-pressure checklist: overall neighborhood feel, golf-cart presence, clubhouse/activity energy, traffic volume, proximity to medical care, shopping convenience, and how easy the drives in/out feel.
Timing guide: leave around 08:30, arrive around 10:30-10:45, broad scout first, 11:15 Kings Point, 12:00 South Shore Hospital pass, 12:15 lunch, 14:15 Valencia del Sol, 15:30 St. Joseph's South pass if you want the bigger-system comparison, then drive back before evening traffic.
Loose nearby-interest list for breaks while scouting: Little Manatee River State Park for an easy nature detour, Apollo Beach Preserve for water views, and the Manatee Viewing Center area in Apollo Beach (best in cooler months, but still a known landmark).
If you want a quick feel for the broader area: drive through nearby Ruskin / Apollo Beach commercial corridors to see everyday shopping, dining, and traffic patterns.
Real-estate scouting cheat sheet:08:30 leave North Fort Myers resort area, 10:30-10:45 arrive Sun City Center area, 11:15 Kings Point, 12:15-13:15 lunch + general commercial-core scouting, 14:15 Valencia del Sol, 15:15-15:45 optional quick drive toward Apollo Beach or Little Manatee area if you want context beyond the communities, then head back before evening traffic.
What to notice at each scouting stop: street feel, housing density, noise, how active the amenities seem, whether people are actually out walking / using golf carts, ease of parking, nearby grocery / pharmacy access, and whether the drive in feels convenient or tiring.
Healthcare lens: notice how quickly you can reach HCA Florida South Shore Hospital, how medical offices cluster nearby, and whether the route to St. Joseph's Hospital- South feels like an easy regional backup.
Day-to-day life drive-through priority: spend more time on the roads between neighborhoods, shopping areas, medical offices, and main entrances than on any one amenity building.
Best practical add-ons: do a slow pass through Ruskin and Apollo Beach to understand errands, traffic, and bay-side everyday life rather than treating this as a sightseeing day.
